Our voices heard

education

Inequitable systems of school finance inflict disproportionate harm on minority and economically disadvantaged students. On an inter-state basis, such students are concentrated in states, primarily in the South, that have the lowest capacities to finance public education. Resource

MINORITY VOICE PLATFORM

All too often our voices are unheard, muted and/or silenced when attempting to seek both equality and justice. We deal with similar issues nationwide on both state-level and local-levels, yet there has yet to be a "common ground" or platform to make these concerns clear to those who have the power to bring about change.

Health care

public transportation

A 2011 study estimates that the economic costs of health disparities due to race for African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos from 2003 thru 2006 was a little over $229 billionResource

 ...Transit analysts say hourly-wage workers like Allen, who are disproportionately reliant on mass transit, are also disproportionately hurt by it when it’s slow and inefficient, forcing them to make an extra effort—and spend stressful, unpaid hours sitting on a bus—just to clock in on time. Resource

criminal

justice

Police violence is a leading cause of death for young men in the United States. Over the life course, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be killed by police. Risk of being killed by police peaks between the ages of 20 y and 35 y for men and women and for all racial and ethnic groups. Black women and men and American Indian and Alaska Native women and men are significantly more likely than white women and men to be killed by police. Latino men are also more likely to be killed by police than are white men. Resource

mental health

Rates of mental illnesses in African Americans are similar with those of the general population. However, disparities exist in regard to mental

health care services. African Americans often receive poorer quality of care and lack access to culturally competent care. Resource
